Before the House Subcommittee on Health and the Environment, each executive was asked whether nicotine is addictive. One after another, under oath, each said he believed it is not.
Internal industry documents released in later litigation showed the companies had understood nicotine's addictiveness for decades.
The subcommittee chairman was Representative Henry Waxman.
