The European Food Safety Authority concluded in 2021 that titanium dioxide could no longer be considered safe as a food additive, because concerns about genotoxicity could not be ruled out. The EU banned it from food in 2022.
In the U.S., 21 CFR 73.575 permits it as a color additive in food.
Brominated vegetable oil, E443, was sold in U.S. soft drinks for decades until the FDA revoked its authorization in 2024.
