THE SHOT
Upshot-Knothole Grable: an atomic artillery shell fired from a 280 mm cannon at the Nevada Test Site, May 25, 1953.
Grable was the only nuclear shell ever fired from an artillery piece in a U.S. test. It detonated at about 15 kilotons.
The Upshot-Knothole series ran through the spring of 1953. Fallout from the Nevada tests drifted over communities in Utah, Nevada and Arizona, the people later called downwinders.
In 1990 Congress passed the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act to pay those it had exposed.
