US-984XN is the NSA's internal designator, its SIGAD, for the collection program called PRISM.
Documents published in June 2013 described PRISM as collection 'directly from the servers of' major U.S. internet companies, including e-mail, chat, video, photos, stored data and file transfers.
The Director of National Intelligence confirmed collection under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and later declassified details of the program.
A second stream of collection, taken directly from the internet's backbone, was called UPSTREAM.
