Carpenter v. United States, 585 U.S. 296, decided June 22, 2018, 5 to 4.
Without a warrant, the government obtained 127 days of Timothy Carpenter's cell-site location records: 12,898 location points, about 101 a day.
The Supreme Court held that getting those records is a Fourth Amendment search and generally requires a warrant.
Until 2018, it had been routine.
