THE PATROL
DESOTO was the name for U.S. Navy intelligence patrols off North Vietnam. On August 4, 1964, the USS Maddox reported it was under attack.
The reported second attack in the Gulf of Tonkin became the basis for the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which authorized the escalation of the Vietnam War.
That night the Maddox's commander cabled: 'Freak weather effects on radar and overeager sonarmen may have accounted for many reports.'
In 2005 the NSA declassified its own historian's study concluding that no attack took place on August 4.
