The CIA's relationships with American journalists, confirmed by the Senate in 1976 and reported by Carl Bernstein in 1977.
The Church Committee found that the CIA maintained covert relationships with dozens of U.S. journalists and news organizations and used them to place and shape stories.
In 1977 Carl Bernstein reported in Rolling Stone that more than 400 American journalists had carried out assignments for the CIA over the previous 25 years.
The name Operation Mockingbird is attached to the program in later accounts. The relationships themselves are in the Senate record.
